The village of Thackley is nestled in the countryside just to the west of Leeds. The Yorkshire Dales and the wilds of Brontë country beckon while the cities of Leeds and Bradford provide all the modern facilities you need to make life just perfect.
LOCAL INFORMATION – THACKLEY
General – The villages of Idle and Thackley are wards in the Bradford and Metropolitan District and have a population of approximately 14,541(according to the 2001 UK Census).
These villages are set in the more rural area of the district and many of the properties in Thackley have spectacular views across the valley.
Shopping / Leisure – Thackley is situated between the cities of Bradford (5 miles) and Leeds (10 miles), both of which have an abundance of fantastic shopping facilities. As well as numerous High Street Shops, Leeds also houses one of the few Harvey Nichols Stores and various other designer outlets, many of which are situated in the beautiful Victoria Quarter and Queens Arcade. In addition to this, Salts Mills at Saltaire, which is only 2 miles away, is another fabulous shopping experience with many homeware products, antiques and book stores.
Shopping aside, there are plenty other areas of interest at Saltaire; with its cobbled streets and honey-coloured stonework it has joined the Taj Mahal and the pyramids of Egypt as a Unesco World Heritage Site, thanks to its preservation as a Victorian Model Industrial Village. Mill owner and philanthropist Sir Titus Salt built his village in the 19th century for the spiritual, physical and moral welfare of his workers. Today his great mill complex is the key feature of Saltaire and houses the 1853 gallery containing the largest collection of art in Europe by renowned Bradfordian David Hockney.
Although there are a multitude of superb restaurants and café bars in both Leeds and Bradford, closer to home, Saltaire and Shipley also have plenty of quality eateries and are home to over 20 restaurants with offerings from around the globe. Sample for yourself award-winning food from the Aagrah or chill out at Bossa Nova where you will find the best of Mediterranean cuisine. There are also plenty of other attractions within the Bradford District and these include:-
National Media Museum (formerly the National Museum of
Photography, Film and Television) is part of the National Museum of Science and Industry and is now one of the most popular museums in the UK outside London, with 615,431 visiting in 2005. This is a magnificent interactive museum which is great for children and adults alike. It also houses the UK’s first IMAX cinema.
Lister Park is one of Bradford's largest parks and is situated on the outskirts of the city. Special features include the Cartwright Hall Museum and Art Gallery, Botanical Gardens, a fine Boating Lake, ideal for hot summer afternoons and the Mughal Water Gardens.
Skipton Castle is over 900 years old and is one of the most complete and best preserved medieval castles in England and is well worth a visit at any season of the year.
Bronte Country – Haworth was home to this famous family and visiting the village is like taking a walk through history, with its cobbled streets, quaint shops and local steam train.
Transport – Within a 5 minute drive is Shipley Railway Station which has direct links to both Bradford and Leeds (the latter being just a 20 minute journey). There are also various buses that run in and around the village.
Education – Thackley has its own primary school in the village and there are various Senior Schools and Higher Education Establishments in the surrounding district.
